No.6 (3.5mm) pozi round head wood screws to DIN 7996, in A2 stainless steel. The head is a smooth dome, also known as a pan head, and the pozi recess takes a PZ2 bit.
A2 stainless works outdoors as well as in, so these are fine for garden projects and weathered timber. Buy as few or as many as you need, with no minimum order, and the more you buy, the less each screw costs.
Where round head screws are used
A round head stands proud of the surface and stays in view, which suits fixings that are meant to be seen, such as hinges, brackets and catches. The screw pulls the fitting down onto the timber as you tighten it. The fitting only needs a plain hole for the screw to pass through, and nothing has to be countersunk.
The pozi recess keeps the bit seated, so these go in cleanly with a drill driver.
If you'd rather the head sat flush with the surface, our No.6 pozi countersunk wood screws are made for a countersunk hole. For a low dome over a countersink, there are also our No.6 pozi raised head countersunk wood screws.
Only part of the length is threaded, with a plain shank beneath the head. The shank slides through the fitting, and the thread bites into the timber below.
Sizes and lengths
A higher gauge means a thicker screw. The No.6 has a 3.5mm thread, which puts it between the No.4 (3mm) and the No.8 (4mm).
Length runs from under the head to the tip, and the head isn't counted. The head adds up to 2.6mm on top of that. The No.6 comes in 6 lengths, from 20mm to 50mm.
On a new No.6, a caliper across the thread reads 3.5mm or a little under, since 3.5mm is the nominal size. The shank beneath the head may be slimmer, down to 3.02mm. Both figures are in the dimensions table.
A2 stainless
A2, also sold as 304 or 18/8, is the standard stainless for fixings, and it copes well with rain and damp. A magnet may tug at it slightly, which is normal.
In coastal or heavily weathered locations, A4 is the better choice for exposed fittings, because salt is harder on stainless. Our A2 stainless steel and A4 stainless steel guides explain which suits which job.
Round head screw questions
What size is a No.6 screw in mm?
A No.6 is 3.5mm across the thread. DIN 7996 also sets the head, which is 7mm across and up to 2.6mm high, with a PZ2 pozi recess.
The No.6 size comes from imperial gauges. These screws are metric, and a 3.5mm thread is the nearest match to an imperial No.6, which is about 3.5mm.
Which bit fits a No.6 pozi round head screw?
Use a PZ2 pozi bit. The recess looks like a Phillips cross, but it has small tick marks between the arms, and the matching bit has ribs that fit them.
A Phillips bit will turn the screw, but it sits loosely and slips out as the screw tightens, which can wreck the head. The right pozi bit grips properly and takes more turning force.
What is a No.6 x 1 inch screw in mm?
A No.6 x 1 inch screw is 3.5 x 25mm here. Wood screws are still sold in inches, so each length shows both, for example 3/4in (20mm), 1in (25mm) and 2in (50mm).
The length is metric and the inch figure is its nearest equivalent, so a 1in screw here is 25mm rather than 25.4mm. On a round head screw, that length is taken from under the head.
How do you measure a No.6 pozi round head screw?
Place a caliper across the widest part of the thread. A new No.6 reads 3.5mm or slightly under, because 3.5mm is the nominal size, and DIN 7996 lets the shank beneath the head go down to 3.02mm.
Measure the length from under the head to the tip. Leave the head out, as it sits on top of the stated length.
