The six-lobe drive is also called hexalobular, but Torx is the common trade name for it. They are made to ISO 14579, the standard for hexalobular socket head cap screws, and the drive shape itself is set by ISO 10664. The head is the same socket cap form as a DIN 912 screw, so if you know cap head bolts, these are the same screw with a Torx drive instead of a hex socket.

Where they're used

The internal drive lets you tighten them in tight spaces, or sink them into a counterbored hole so the head sits flush or below the surface, the same as any socket cap screw. The main benefit with these is the Torx drive, it grips the tool on all six lobes, so it transfers more torque and is far less likely to cam out and slip than a hex key, which makes it a favourite on production lines, powered tools and anywhere a screw gets driven again and again. The Torx drive

Torx, or hexalobular to give it the proper name, is a six-lobe star pattern rather than the six flats of a hex socket. Because the tool touches the screw over a wider area, it can carry more torque with less downward push and much less slipping, which saves rounded-out heads and chewed tools. You will see these cross-referenced as DIN 912 Torx, because the head matches the familiar DIN 912 cap screw and only the drive changes. For general use A2 stainless is the everyday grade, and for coastal or salty work A4 stainless is the tougher pick.
