How to measure Torx countersunk chipboard screws

How to measure Torx countersunk chipboard screws
  1. Thread: Measure across the outside of the thread with calipers. A new screw reads its size or a touch under, so a 5mm screw reads 5mm or just under.
  2. Full thread: The thread runs right up to the head, so there is no plain shank to measure and the reading is the same all the way along.
  3. Length: Measure overall, from the top of the head to the point. On a countersunk screw the head counts.
  4. Head: The underside is a 90° cone, so it sits flush in a standard 90° countersink. The Torx recess takes a T10, T20 or T25 bit, as listed in the Dimensions table.
Dimension Symbol Value
Thread diameter (nominal) d 6.0 mm
Head diameter dk 11.5 to 12.0 mm
Head height (max) k 3.6 mm
Torx bit size T T25
Lengths available (overall, including head) L 40, 45, 50, 60, 70, 80 mm

The letters match the Dimensions table above.

A2 stainless steel chipboard screws in 6mm, with a flat countersunk head and a Torx recess that takes a T25 bit. The thread runs from the tip right up to the head. Head sizes are taken from the withdrawn DIN 7505 table for flat countersunk chipboard screws.

A Torx recess has six lobes, and the bit is much less likely to lift out of it than a pozi bit. A2 stainless copes with damp conditions as well as dry. There is no minimum order, and the price per screw falls as you add more.

What these screws are for

Chipboard screws are designed for particleboard, MDF and other engineered boards, where the core is soft and crumbly. The full-length thread keeps gripping right up to the head. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets, MDF and particleboard furniture and shop fitting are the usual jobs, and the countersunk head leaves the surface flush.

The sharp tip and cutting thread mean most boards will take the screw without a pilot hole. Pre-drill near an edge or corner so the board does not split.

Prefer a pozi drive? The 6mm pozi countersunk chipboard screws are the same size with a PZ3 recess.

Torx chipboard screw sizes

6mm is the nominal thread diameter and is the closest metric equivalent of a No.14. The Torx chipboard range covers 3mm (No.4) to 6mm (No.14).

Length is measured overall with the head included, so a 40mm screw is 40mm from the top of the head to the tip. There are 6 lengths in 6mm, running from 40mm to 80mm. Pick one that bites well into the board but stops short of the far face.

A 90 degree countersink cutter suits the head, which measures 11.5 to 12mm across and up to 3.6mm high.

Which Torx bit to use

The 6mm takes a T25 bit. Across the range it is T10 on the 3mm and 3.5mm, T20 on the 4mm, and T25 on the 5mm and 6mm.

A2 stainless grades

A2, also called 304 or 18/8, is the usual stainless grade for fixings and suits indoor work and most outdoor jobs. It can show a slight pull on a magnet, and that is normal.

If the board stays wet or humid, A4 is worth considering. The A2 stainless steel and A4 stainless steel guides explain how the two grades differ.

Torx chipboard screw questions

What size is a 6mm Torx chipboard screw?

It is 6mm across the thread, which is close to a No.14 gauge. The flat countersunk head is 11.5 to 12mm across and up to 3.6mm high, and the recess takes a T25 bit.

What Torx bit fits a 6mm chipboard screw?

A T25 bit. The bit size is also listed in the Dimensions table on this page.

Can you screw into chipboard without a pilot hole?

In most cases yes, because the sharp tip and thread cut their own way into chipboard and MDF. Close to a board edge or corner, drill a small pilot hole first to lower the risk of splitting.

How do I choose the length of a chipboard screw?

Measure the board you are fixing into and pick a length that goes well in without reaching the far face. Length here includes the head, so it is counted from the flat top of the head to the tip.

Is Torx better than pozi for chipboard screws?

Torx is much less prone to cam-out, which is when the bit lifts out of the recess under load. Pozi still works well and is a common choice, so it comes down to preference.

How do I measure a chipboard screw?

Measure across the thread with calipers. A 6mm screw reads 6mm or just under, as 6mm is the nominal size. The measuring guide above shows how to measure the length and the head.

I needed specific Torx wood screws to hold a lavatory pan down onto a wood floorboards. Torx are so good because they don't round off unlike some Philips heads. Needed stainless steel so they don't rust in the future years.

Hi Julian,

Great to hear you are happy with your torx countersunk chipboard screws, Hope your floor is looking good.

Thanks
